Teabowls

I have been in a mood for teabowls lately. Considering how few I make each year, this is sort of odd. Each one seems to have more rippling and folding or twisting than the one before it. The decorating is mostly slip trailing and facetting. The facetting is usually done with a spring on a cheese cutter, but this week I am finding my plain old wire to be more interesting. Here are a few images.

I don't even know what a tea bowl is - isn't that embarrassing? =) They're beautiful though - each one looks more creative than the last.

Well, Anne-Marie, I guess an explanation is in order. To do the subject justice, I will write up a blurb about teabowls tonight. Since they are of Japanese origin, they are fraught with history and assorted baggage. Suffice to say, potters who make teabowls, all make them differently, and none are much like what is seen historically in Japan. More tomorrow!

Thank you Maryszka. Having a wicked macro lens helps! Nancy and Aurora chipped in some major $ to get this lens...father's day/birthday/christmas gift. I love using it to get RIGHT up next to the subject.

I did some shooting with it on the big abstract platters back in the summer and early fall. More of those details coming to the blog in the weeks to come. Still need to do some post production on them first!
